Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 2nd One Day International - 1985/6 - Match Report

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 2nd One Day International - Bulawayo - 1985/6

With Zaheer still missing through injury, Shoaib Mohammad came into the XI for the Pakistanis.
Imran, missing the 1st game through injury, came back into the side in place of seamer Mohsin Kamal.
Zimbabwe welcomed back Pycroft and Jarvis, in place of batsman Andy Flower and keeper Wayne James.
With the pitch Normal and weather conditions good, Pakistan elected to bat first upon winning the toss.
Mudassar was out for a duck in Brandes opening over, before Mohsin Khan and Shoaib Mohammad steadied things with a slow but solid partnership of 47.
When they were out, an aggressive middle order took over, Saleem Malik top scoring with 56 as Pakistan totalled 210/6 off 50 overs.
Javed and Rameez also contributed, but at the halfway mark Zimbabwe would have felt they were in with a chance.
Brandes and Shah claimed 3 wickets apiece in an improved bowling performance by the home team.
An excellent partnership of 105 for the 2nd wicket between Shah and Pycroft set things up for Zimbabwe, with Shah contributing a run a ball 73 before Houghton took over.
Houghton made an unbeaten run a ball 63* to take Zimbabwe close, but a lower order collapse in which the last 4 batsmen fell without scoring saw the home team fall 20 runs short, bowled out for 190 with 3 overs to spare.
Abdul Qadir claimed 4-39 and received good support again from the seamers.
Victory by 20 runs saw Pakistan take a 2-0 lead in the 5 match series.
Man of the Match was Ali Shah, for his outstanding allround effort of 73 and 3-32.

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st Test - Harare - 1985/6

Trailing by 125 on first innings, Zimbabwe began their 2nd innings under pressure.
The Zimbabwean top order again found the Pakistani seamers too hot to handle, and with legspinner Abdul Qadir claiming the final 4 wickets, the home team were all out for a disappointing 147.
Imran Khan claimed 3-24, while Abdul Qadir made up for his poor 1st innings display with 4-56.
Andy Waller's hard hitting 69 with 7 fours and 3 sixes was the only resistance, in an excellent display by the varied and pacy Pakistani attack.
The Pakistani openers knocked off the runs required without loss to hand Pakistan a 10 wicket victory and a 1-0 lead in the series
Man of the Match was Mudassar Nazar, his 1st innings allround efforts have made sure Pakistan were always ahead in the game.

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st Test - 1985/6 - Pakistan 1st Innings

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st Test - Harare - 1985/6

Pakistan started their reply well, experienced openers Mudassar Nazar and Mohsin Khan putting on 76 for the first wicket, before Mohsin was out for 29.
Mudassar carried on to make a well made 77 to continue his good allround game, but with Javed and Zaheer missing, Zimbabwean offspinner Traicos worked his way through an inexperienced middle order, claiming 5 of the first 6 wickets to fall.
At 209/6 Pakistan were under some pressure, but a well made 87* by keeper batsman Ashraf Ali, and 55 from captain Imran, and 47 to Wasim, lifted Pakistan to 395, and a valuable first innings lead of 125.
Traicos claimed the bowling honours with 5-111 from 46 overs, while left arm seamer Jarvis impressed with his accuracy in taking 3-48 at less than 2 runs per over.

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st Test - 1985/6 - Zimbabwe 1st Innings

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st Test - Harare - 1985/6

Pitch: 72

Toss: Zimbabwe

Pakistan went into the 1st Test without experienced batsmen Javed Miandad and Zaheer Abbas, who were both injured, being lead in this game by Imran Khan.
With the pitch good for batting over the first couple of days, seamer Mohsin Kamal was preferred to offspinner Tauseef Ahmed for the final Pakistani bowling position, the selectors feeling his ability to find swing would be valuable on a pitch offering the bowlers little otherwise.
Zimbabwe won the toss, and with the pitch best for batting early in the match, elected to bat first.
The home team lost wickets steadily to the seamers, and at 150/7 the Zimbabweans were in deep trouble.
A fighting century from Houghton held them together, and with support coming from a gritty 62 from number 9 David Brain, Zimbabwe posted a respectable 270.
Mohsin Kamal was the pick of the bowlers, justifying his selection ahead of spinner Tauseef, claiming 4-57.
Mudassar Nazar showed his allround value in taking 3-20.

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st One Day International 1985/6 - Match Report

Zimbabwe v Pakistan - 1st One Day International - Harare - 1985/6

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat on a slow pitch.
The top 3 scored at a decent rate, but were out after making starts, and it took half centuries by Javed Miandad and Zaheer Abbas to ensure a solid platform.
With keeper Ashraf Ali and the lower order hitting out well in the later overs, Pakistan achieved a healthy total off 235/8 off their allotted 50 overs.
Zimbabwean left arm seamer David Brain took 4-46, but the home team's attack generally struggled to contain the run rate, especially in the later overs.
Kevin Arnott and Ali Shah added 62 for the 1st wicket when the Zimbabweans began their chase, but struggled to score at the required rate, and this put pressure on the later batsmen.
Houghton scored a typically hard hitting 46, but wickets fell steadily, and with all the bowlers hard to score off, the match was over as a contest long before the end.
Legspinner Abdul Qadir claimed 4-34 and the Man of the Match award, as Pakistan ran out comfortable winners by 72 runs, to take a 1-0 lead in the 5 match ODI series.

ZCU President's XI v Pakistanis - 50 over List A tour matches - Bulawayo - 1985/6

Toss: Pakistanis

Pitch: 8A - Some turn for spinners

The Pakistanis won the toss and elected to bat, and were immediately in trouble, losing both openers for ducks.
Saleem quickly followed for 2, and when Imran fell it was 42/4.
Rameez Raja batted well for 73 to stop the rot, and a hard hitting 30 from keeper Saleem Yousuf carried them to a mediocre 183/9 off 50 overs.
Left arm seamer David Brain bowled superbly for his 3-19 off 10 overs, while offspinner John Traicos enjoyed the spinning conditions.
The home team's reply began badly, as they slipped to 14/3.
Houghton however was playing on a different plane to the others, and found a willing ally in Butchart who posted 32.
Houghton carried on through the innings, posting a wonderful hundred.
With 9 wickets down, and 2 needed for victory, he was on strike to seamer Manzoor Elahi.
Dramatically he edged behind and the crowd held their breath, a catch would have seen them lose the match by a run.
But luckily for Houghton, the edge evaded the keeper and went for 4, giving the ZCU President's XI victory by 1 wicket.
Imran Khan had bowled well for the Pakistanis to get them back into the game, but their first innings total had proven too low and cost them the game.
Houghton's lone hand had given his side victory and he was duly named Man of the Match.

ZCU President's XI v Pakistanis - 3 day First Class match - Bulawayo - 1985/6

The ZCU President's XI slipped to 44/4 in their 2nd innings, raising hopes of a victory for the Pakistanis, but a 138 run partnership for the 5th wicket between Andy Waller and Andy Flower saw the home team to the draw.
There was some thought of attempting a late charge at victory, but the home team's weak lower order convinced them to content themselves with the draw.
Man of the Match was Iqbal Qasim for his first innings haul of 6 wickets.
